Armstrong says ND’s rural health care challenges demand bold action in State of the State Address
BISMARCK, N.D. – North Dakota’s rural health care challenges demand bold action and new approaches, Gov. Kelly Armstrong said in the annual State of the State Address on Wednesday, Jan. 21 as the 69th Legislative Assembly convened in a special session to appropriate $199 million in federal funding for a statewide Rural Health Transformation Program.

Correctional officer found dead at local motel, apparent suicide
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (Feb. 2, 2026) – Correctional Officer Justin Smith was found dead by apparent suicide at age 38 on Saturday, Jan. 31 at a local motel.

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – On Thursday, Jan. 29, over 50 legislators from 15 states gathered in-person at the Minnesota State Capitol for a Day of Solidarity with their Minnesota colleagues, including North Dakota State Sens. Tim Mathern and Ryan Braunberger, as well as Reps. Jayme Davis, Gretchen Dobervich, and Austin Foss. That same day, a national virtual press Zoom conference was held with over 100 state legislators from across the nation, including State Rep. Lisa Finley-DeVille.
ND Senate kills free school meals bill, but ballot measure likely to appear in November
BISMARCK, N.D. – On Jan. 23, the North Dakota Senate voted down House Bill 1624, which would have provided up to $65 million to fund free school breakfasts and lunches for every student in the state. The vote was 24 against, 22 in favor. The bill had passed in the House the previous day on Jan. 22, 55 in favor and 38 against. However, a measure for free school meals is likely to appear on the ballot in November
