The Devils Lake City Commission met in regular session Monday, Oct. 7 at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall.
At the top of the agenda for this meeting were awards and recognitions of employees for their years of service.
Mayor Jim Moe called them forward to receive his thanks and a certificate acknowledging their years of service to the community. Officer Darin Rixen was thanked for his 10 years of service with the Devils Lake Police Department.
David Austin from the city’s Sanitation Department was recognized for his 25 years of service. The Mayor shook their hands and presented them with certificates from the City, posing for photographs. City employee Andrew Johnson will also be receiving a certificate and recognition of his 10 years of service to the city, however he was not present at Monday evening’s meeting.
One issue under New Business garnered considerable discussion as Kurt Baeth, LRSC Hockey Booster Club President stepped up to the podium to request permission from the city to sell alcoholic beverages at LRSC hockey games. Several concerns were discussed and the commissioners questioned the wisdom of adding alcohol consumption to what is often an already violent game. Baeth addressed each of the concerns and security issues one by one and ultimately the commission voted “Aye” to give the venture a try for one year and to see how it works out. The one dissenting vote came from Commissioner Joe Knowski.
Four public hearings were also held and special assessment lists certified; Watermain Improvement District 27-22, 2023-24 Curb, Gutter and Sidewalk, Parking Assessment and Miscellaneous Assessment. The final item, the Miscellaneous Assessment was approved after the recommended removal of one item that had been on the list. It was an overdue utilities bill attached to a parcel of land that had changed ownership and the new owner requested he not be liable for someone else’s bill. After some discussion his request was granted and the individual who previously had owned the property would be contacted to pay the bill for which he was responsible.
Additional items covered included paying the city’s bills and a payoff of Sales Tax Revenue Bond Series 201 5B, a 24-06 Budget Amendment.
The next regularly scheduled City Commission meeting will be Monday, Oct. 21 at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall.
