While most people see Labor Day as the official (or unofficial) end to summer, it’s a day off for many. However, you don’t have to look very far before you find that isn’t the case for everyone.

You’d expect if you called 911 on Labor Day, that someone would be there to answer your call. Correct? Therefore at the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center there are dispatchers working on Labor Day and everyday to provide services needed throughout the community. That also includes the Devils Lake Police Department, Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office and personnel from Corrections, among others.

At the Devils Lake Volunteer Fire Department, they are vigilant, ready if they are called to an emergency or highway accident.

At the hospital, CHI St. Alexius Devils Lake Hospital, there are many people laboring to care for the injured and ill in their care.

At the Lake Region Ambulance Service, they are ready for just about any emergency they would be called to, no matter if it is a Federal Holiday or not.

Not everyone gets to picnic in the park or relax with family or fish from the pontoon on Labor Day because they have to work.

For love or money: (or both?)

The Journal took a little time Monday morning to find out who was laboring on Labor Day, here’s what we found.

Dave is a part time worker for the City of Devils Lake, he was driving around the downtown of the city watering plants and flower baskets hanging from light poles, helping to keep the historic shopping district looking lovely.

Susie was waiting on customers at Old Main Street Cafe.

Michelle was running the cash register and serving customers at Cenex One Stop.

Jerry was making deliveries wherever he could for his company, J & S Vending.

Jeff was washing windows at his mom’s house while she and a friend drove to Stump Lake for the Old Fashioned Threshing Bee.

Peter was cleaning the sidewalks and grooming the lawn at the Episcopal Church of the Advent.

Rachel was making pizzas and serving customers at MaryAnn’s Place Pizza and Ice Cream Parlor.

Brian, truck driver from Hunt Brothers Pizza was making a delivery in Devils Lake.

Andrew and Mojo were working at the Devils Lake Journal getting stories and photos ready for Thursday’s newspaper.

Here’s our thanks and tribute to all of you who labor to keep us safe, well, fed and served on Labor Day and every day.
