Tuesday brought the brief return of sub-zero temperatures and snow on the ground. No. 1 North Star, which was supposed to play in the District 3 championship game against Midway/Minto, had its contest postponed to Wednesday. It will commence at approximately 2:30 p.m. at Langdon Area High School.
The Bearcats are coming off a game in which Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich came out to a large lead in the opening minutes, but they battled through a rowdy atmosphere to claw their way back in and come away on the other side.
They beat Midway/Minto 70-41 during the regular season. The Mustangs entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed and beat the No. 2 seed, Cavalier, 62-61.
Highlights
No. 3 Four Winds/Minnewaukan boys’ basketball also had its game postponed. The Indians were scheduled to finish their regular season on the road against Thompson on Tuesday, but that game had to be pushed to Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
Only one of the three games previously scheduled for Tuesday in the District 3 tournament was able to happen. LA/E/M, on its home court, beat Park River/Fordville-Lankin 61-45 to advance to a region qualifier game. The Cardinals are playing well in the most important time of the season.
What to watch
As noted above, FW/M boys’ basketball will complete its regular season on Wednesday. The Indians need to beat Thompson to secure the No. 2 seed in Region 2.
Wednesday is also a big day for the Lake Region State College basketball teams. The third-place women will host a playoff game at 7 p.m. against last-place Bismarck State College. The Royals beat the Mystics in all three regular-season meetings — and by a double-digit point total each time.
The last-place men, meanwhile, will face fourth-place Miles Community College on the road at 8 p.m. CT (7 p.m. MT). The Royals lost all three matchups to Miles during the regular season, but they came a little closer each time, and lost by as little as six in their most recent faceoff on Feb. 18.
Preceding North Star’s District 3 championship contest, North Border will play Cavalier in the second region qualifier game.
