Thursday saw a busy slate of high school basketball games, including North Star staying undefeated. The Devils Lake basketball teams will be back in action on Friday. The Firebirds, along with Four Winds/Minnewaukan, will compete in the Class A Boys Shootout in Devils Lake.

Highlights

The No. 2 North Star boys’ basketball team improved to 10-0 with a 70-41 win over Midway/Minto. Parker Simon led with 20 points. The Bearcats are now 2-0 in district play. For more on this game, read here.

Four Winds/Minnewaukan girls’ basketball beat Hillsboro/Central Valley 68-55 on the road, improving to 6-8 overall and 2-4 in Region 2 play.

Benson County boys’ basketball also won, beating Hatton/Northwood 60-50 at home. New Rockford-Sheyenne lost to Larimore 52-43 on the road.

Both Devils Lake High School wrestling programs had a successful Thursday evening. The girls got a 36-18 victory over Northern Lights, with Elizabeth Orness, Isabella Tangedal, Olivia Lindstrom, Brianna Edwardson, Jaylee Jetty and Isabelle Berg taking home wins. It was the Firebirds’ first time beating Northern Lights at home.

The boys also won, a whopping 60-7 victory over Grand Forks Red River. The following Firebirds wrestlers had wins: Rylan Samuelson, Wesley Fisk, Owen Lindstrom, Tucker Bennett, Daniel Charboneau, Coby Dronen Levitt, Easton Encinas, Micah Dutch, Harley Crist, Tate Estenson and Braxton Rance.

The Lake Region State College baseball program made its second signing in the last three days, adding right-handed pitcher Logan Enns. He hails from Oakbank, Manitoba, Canada.

What to watch

The Class A Boys Shootout will kick off with No. 2 Four Winds/Minnewaukan taking on Turtle Mountain Community at 1:30 p.m. in the Devils Lake Sports Center gym. The Indians are 8-2 overall and 2-1 in Region 2.

No. 3 Devils Lake will follow at 3 p.m. for a matchup against Shiloh Christian. The Firebirds are 8-1 overall, 3-1 in Region 2.

Devils Lake girls’ basketball is on the road against first-place Thompson at 7:30 p.m. The Firebirds have a four-game winning streak going.

Both Devils Lake hockey teams have games on Friday as well. The girls play at 4 p.m. against Minot at MAYSA Arena, while the boys play at home at 7:30 p.m. against Grand Forks Red River.

Between afternoon basketball and evening hockey, it’ll be a long and action-packed day of sports in the town of Devils Lake.
