Mason Palmer named all-state in Class A baseball; four from area make Class B all-state

Mason Palmer is now an all-state baseball player.

The Devils Lake senior was one of 18 selections to the Class A all-state team released Thursday, as voted on by the North Dakota High School Coaches Association. He’s the first all-state baseball player for Devils Lake since 2019.

The two-way talent put it all together on both sides of the ball this spring.

At the plate during the regular season, Palmer batted .381/.458/.556, good for a 1.014 OPS. He walked 12.5% of the time while striking out just 6.9% of the time. He led Devils Lake in hits with 24, and in doubles with six. He also hit a home run and a triple.

Palmer went on to reach five times in 10 postseason plate appearances.

On the mound, Palmer pitched a team-high 27 innings during the regular season, allowing just six earned runs. He struck out 41 batters compared to only six walks. He limited the opposition to 15 hits.

Palmer added a seven-inning performance with no earned runs allowed in the region tournament against Fargo Davies, which helped advance Devils Lake to the state qualifier round.

Devils Lake went 11-9 in region play and finished 12-11 overall. The Firebirds had a winning region record for the third consecutive year.

Palmer is committed to continue his baseball career at the University of Jamestown alongside twin brother Max.

Palmer has previously been named to all-state teams in football and basketball. He was the Senior Athlete of the Year on the Division AA state champion football team.

The Class A baseball NDHSCA POWERade Outstanding Senior Athlete this year was Minot North’s Brody Mueller. The SUBWAY Coach of the Year was West Fargo Horace’s Quinn Irey.

In Class B, the Lake Region had four representatives on the all-state teams announced Tuesday.

Langdon Area/Munich’s Theo Romfo and Nelson County/Midkota’s Brody Rainsberry were both first-team selections.

Romfo hit .511 with four home runs during the regular season while not allowing an earned run in 22 innings on the mound with 36 strikeouts. In the postseason, he allowed three runs (one earned) in seven innings in a region tournament win over eventual state champion Park River Area.

Romfo was named the NDHSCA POWERade Outstanding Senior Athlete.

Romfo graduates having also been a Division A state champion and all-state selection in football. He’s a cousin of UND football’s Romfo twins.

Rainsberry batted .412 with a .574 OBP this year while posting a 1.45 ERA on the mound.

He was also an all-state football player last fall and was a starter on the NC/M basketball team that made it to state. Rainsberry is playing baseball for the Devils Lake Storm this summer.

North Star’s Hunter Hagler and LA/M’s Landon Schneider made the Class B all-state second team.

Hagler hit .421 with a .596 OBP for the Bearcats this season. He finishes a worthy North Star career that included all-region honors in basketball this winter while leading his team to the state tournament. He was also the football team’s quarterback and will be playing in the Shrine Bowl this summer.

Schneider hit .428 with five home runs as the Cardinals’ cleanup hitter. He and Romfo combined for nine bombs in the three-four slots.

Kindred’s Scott Milbrandt took SUBWAY Coach of the Year honors.
