A whole bunch of regular seasons came to a close this past week. The playoffs started already for North Star, while most other teams around the area played their regular season finales.
The final stretch of spring is here.
Athlete spotlight: Easton Simon, New Rockford-Sheyenne baseball
The senior standout had not pitched yet this year for NR-S.
He made his season pitching debut in the Rockets’ final game of the regular season on Thursday. Thomas Allmaras opened for him by pitching the first inning, and Simon pitched the next three. He struck out three, walked one and allowed only one hit in three scoreless innings.
Simon did his usual thing at the plate, too, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
NR-S won 8-1 to improve its record to 9-7 ahead of the playoffs.
Simon is nearing the end of an extraordinarly accomplished high school career. He’s a three-time all-state quarterback, winning the nine-man state championship in each of his final two years. He was also an all-state point guard in basketball this winter, and was named the Region 2 Senior Athlete of the Year. As a junior, he led NR-S to the state tournament.
It’s no surprise that he can handle himself on the baseball field, too.
Before Thursday, he’d been limited to hitting and playing the infield this season. Now he and the Rockets, with their winning record, are looking to return to state for the first time since 2024.
Simon also plays some golf. He shot an 85 at regionals on Wednesday.
Game spotlight: Nelson County/Midkota baseball team mashes in regular season finale
It’s been a bit of a down year for the Chargers, but they had some fun in their final game of the regular season on Tuesday.
They walloped Carrington 13-3 — a run-rule victory in six innings — to improve their record to 6-9.
NC/M scored in all six innings, highlighted by three in the first and four in the sixth. Brody Rainsberry had a monster game out of the leadoff spot, going 4-for-4 with a double and a walk, while fellow senior Landon Sundeen hit a home run and reached base three times. Every NC/M starter reached base and eight of the nine recorded a hit. Lakin Ronningen added a three-hit performance, while Cooper Hovdenes and Brendan Lenz each tallied multiple hits.
On the mound, Hovdenes pitched a complete game. He gave up three runs in the first inning — two of which were earned — but he cruised from there. He limited Carrington to just those three runs on five hits and three walks.
The Chargers will have to hope this victory gives them the shot in the arm they’ll need to make a run in the playoffs.
