Devils Lake baseball will now host Grand Forks Red River on Monday, May 11.
The teams were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader on Tuesday, May 5. The games were postponed due to cold weather and strong wind.
With the change, Devils Lake now has games on three consecutive weekdays to complete its regular season. After hosting first-place West Fargo Horace on Friday, the Firebirds will play third-place Red River on Monday and eighth-place Fargo North on Tuesday. The regular season will conclude on May 12.
Devils Lake enters that stretch with a 9-5 Eastern Dakota Conference record, good for fourth place. A top-four seed would give the Firebirds a home playoff game on May 19.
Horace, though, is 11-1 in EDC play and is led by Oregon commit Cason Borchardt. Red River also has some standouts in Nebraska commit Jacob Willardson and Iowa Central commit Alex Seaver. Both matchups are key tests for Devils Lake.
As of Wednesday, Devils Lake is one game behind second-place Fargo South (9-3) in the standings. Third-place Red River (7-3) is virtually tied with Devils Lake, with Red River leading by percentage points. Monday’s slate could change that in one direction or another, as head-to-head results are the first determinant in the case of two teams having the same conference win percentage. If Devils Lake and Red River split their doubleheader, then their run differential against each other would come into play.
West Fargo Sheyenne (7-5), West Fargo (7-5), Fargo Davies (7-6) and even Fargo North (7-7) remain within striking distance of Devils Lake.
Devils Lake holds potential tiebreakers against South, Sheyenne and West Fargo.
The Firebirds head into this stretch aiming for their first state appearance since 2010. The top four teams at the end of the EDC tournament will advance to the state tournament.
