The latest in area sports:

Athlete spotlight: Lacie Fautsch, Benson County track and field

Fautsch placed first in both the shout put and discus in a meet on Tuesday.

She made state in both events last year, and she’s already qualified in both again. She set her personal best in the discus back on April 14 with a 120’3” mark, and she won the event with a 114’3” this week. Her best shot put mark is 35’11”; the best she’s done so far this year is a 35’6” to punch her ticket back to the state tournament. She won the event with a 33’2” this week.

Fautsch is still a sophomore. As a freshman, she finished 18th at state in shot put and 20th in discus. She’s on her way to improving that standing this season.

Game spotlight: Rockets win rivalry matchup

New Rockford-Sheyenne won a key region baseball game, beating rival Carrington 13-5.

The Rockets have taken the rivalry game in boys’ basketball and baseball this school year.

It was topsy-turvy through the first three innings, as each team scored three in the third. Carrington led, 5-4. But NR-S scored four in the fourth, with two-run singles from Alex Weisenburger and Jax Demester. The Rockets scored two in the fifth and three in the seventh to run away with it.

Skye Kramlich settled in on the mound, going the distance. He struck out 10 batters and walked only one. He gave up five runs on eight hits, with all of the runs coming in the first three innings. He threw 111 pitches (75 strikes).

NR-S totaled 13 hits and five walks. Thomas Allmaras recorded three hits out of the leadoff spot, and four other Rockets had multi-hit games.

NR-S improved to 3-2 in region play.
