Lake Region sports roundup: April 21-23

This week saw the local baseball and softball teams finally play their first home games.

There was plenty of track action throughout the week as well, including a new batch of state qualifiers.

Athlete spotlight: Finley Wirth and Sara Kraft, Devils Lake track and field

Kraft, a standout junior track athlete for the Firebirds, qualified in two more events this week.

Not only that, but she set a school record for the triple jump on Tuesday. The mark was 36’4”.

She added the 200-meter dash to her list of qualified events on Thursday. She has now qualified for five events this spring. She previously set a school record in the 100 as well, running a 12.65.

While Kraft has been to state numerous times already, Wirth is in his first year on the track team. And he’s thriving. He secured his first two qualifications on Tuesday, making it in the long jump and javelin. Wirth has consistently finished near the top of the leaderboards throughout the season, and now his hard work is paying off.

Game spotlight: LRSC teams end losing streaks

The Lake Region State College baseball team ended a 12-game losing streak, while the softball team ended a 24-game losing streak.

The baseball team swept Dakota College at Bottineau on Thursday despite giving up a six-run inning late in each game. The first game — a 16-13 win — took roughly three and a half hours to complete. LRSC issued 12 walks and drew 11 of its own. The Royals did just enough to hold on in each game.

The softball team, meanwhile, doubled its longest losing streak in program history with 24 consecutive losses. But the Royals also swept Bottineau on Thursday, winning a topsy-turvy 14-10 game before blowing out the Lumberjacks with a 22-5 beatdown.
