Nelson County/Midkota has entered the softball rankings.

The Chargers came in at No. 10 in the Class B softball coaches poll released Tuesday, powered by Bobcat Company. NC/M received 12 points, trailing No. 9 Valley City’s 19.

Central Cass leads the way with 138 points and 13 out of 14 first-place votes.

NC/M had been unranked in the preseason poll, which was released on March 23.

The jolt comes after a 4-0 start for the Chargers. As of Tuesday, they’re tied with Thompson at the top of Region 2 with a 2-0 region record. Thompson is ranked No. 5 in the coaches poll and is set to travel to McVille to play NC/M on Thursday.

The Chargers went 10-5 last year and returned a strong core of players. They’re led by junior Mya Luehring, their primary pitcher and three-hole hitter. Through four games, Luehring has limited the opposition to 15 earned runs in 25 innings while collecting 29 strikeouts. She’s allowed three earned runs or fewer in three of her four starts.

The NC/M offense has been a unit, scoring 46 runs over four games. The Chargers have collected 50 hits in that span.

The early success has given the squad a taste of statewide recognition.

NC/M is scheduled to play Grafton in a region game on Tuesday, April 21, No. 5 Thompson on Thursday, then Carrington — which started the year at No. 10 — on Monday, April 27. These three games should be a good opportunity for the Chargers to prove their worth against other quality teams.
