Lake Region sports roundup: April 14-16

in

It was a busy middle of the week in the sports world.

Baseball and softball kicked into full gear; the Devils Lake softball team won its season opener against Grafton. Nelson County/Midkota kept rolling in softball, while New Rockford-Sheyenne baseball opened region play.

Track and field was busy, too, as numerous athletes punched their tickets to the state track meet. Devils Lake junior Sara Kraft qualified in three events during the week.

Athlete spotlight: Mya Luehring, Nelson County/Midkota softball

Luehring has been one of the key leaders throughout NC/M’s 4-0 start.

The Chargers won two more games this week — both region games — and Luehring shined on both sides of the ball. In a 14-3 win over Midway/Minto, she went 3-for-3 with a home run and six RBIs at the plate, and pitched five innings with five strikeouts in the circle.

Then, in a 9-3 win over Langdon Area/Munich, she went 2-for-4 at the plate and held the Cardinals to one run in six innings in the circle.

The junior has only continued to take strides from her already-strong sophomore campaign. As of Friday, her team stands atop the Class B, Region 2 softball standings.

Game spotlight: NR-S baseball wins region opener

A funky set of scheduling changes resulted in the Rockets playing an afternoon game on Wednesday. It was their home opener, complete with renovations and park additions that they got to show off for the first time.

NR-S beat Kidder County 4-2 to get off to a 1-0 start in region play. It was an all-around complete team win. Skye Kramlich handled business on the mound, limiting Kidder County to two runs (one earned). He collected an impressive 11 strikeouts. The Simon brothers led the offense, as Easton and Jaxon each went 2-for-3 to help the Rockets fight back from an early 1-0 deficit. Easton also drew a walk and had two RBIs.

Thomas Allmaras went 2-for-3 with a walk, and he threw a perfect seventh inning to shut the door.
