For the second year in a row, Devils Lake’s Tylie Brodina was named all-state in basketball.
Four Winds/Minnewaukan’s Suri Gourd joined her on the all-state second team. Both were chosen by the North Dakota High School Coaches Association, which released its Division A all-state selections on Tuesday.
Brodina, a junior, averaged 19.1 points per game going into the state tournament. She scored 43 points over the three-day tournament, as Devils Lake took a seventh-place finish.
Brodina added 3.1 assists and 2.9 steals per game ahead of the Firebirds’ third consecutive trip to the state tournament. She surpassed 1,000 career points in late December.
Devils Lake went 16-12 overall.
Brodina is no stranger to accolades. Two years ago, as a freshman, she was named the state tournament MVP as the Firebirds won their first state title since 1987. She’s now been on the all-state second team in two consecutive seasons.
Gourd, meanwhile, was named all-state for the first time.
Still just a sophomore, Gourd averaged 26.1 points per game in a redemptive season for FW/M. A year after winning just five games, the Indians went 16-8.
Gourd surpassed 1,000 career points in the last game of her freshman season. She went on to get past the 1,500 mark this year, ending the campaign with 1,649. Assuming she gets another full, healthy season next year, she’s on pace to surpass 2,000 points as a junior.
Gourd’s single-game high in points was 48 in a region win over Grafton.
Gourd was one of two sophomores on the all-state team. The other was Kindred’s Siera Nipstad.
Thompson, a region foe of both Devils Lake and FW/M, took home the two main individual awards. Addison Sage was named the POWERade Outstanding Senior Athlete, and Jason Brend took home Coach of the Year honors. The Tommies finished third at state.
