Two of this year’s Benson County girls’ basketball players were given all-state honors.
Aubrey Kenner and Kaitlyn Maddock were both chosen by the North Dakota High School Coaches Association. The all-state roster — divided into a first team and second team — was released Monday.
Kenner, the POWERade Outstanding Senior Athlete, was one of five first-team selections. During the District 4 tournament, she surpassed Benson County’s all-time scoring record of 1,847. She was named the Senior Athlete of the Year for her district and region before eventually being announced as the winner for all of Division B at the state tournament.
Kenner averaged 17.5 points per game going into the state tournament. She scored 59 over the three days in Minot, en route to earning all-tournament honors.
Kenner made 46 three-pointers on the season.
Maddock, a junior, was a second-team selection. She’s also a member of the 1,000-point club, surpassing the mark in last year’s state tournament. She averaged 11 points, 4.6 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game going into this year’s state tournament. She made 29 three-pointers.
Benson County finished third at state after winning the championship last season. The Wildcats had a 24-3 record.
Langdon Area/Munich’s Hilary Haaven was also named to the second team. She was the only freshman to be named all-state in Division B.
Haaven averaged 14.3 points per game to lead a young LA/M offense. With two key players injured all season, Haaven’s emergence helped keep the Cardinals competitive.
LA/M played Benson County close in the district championship but ultimately fell one game short of state. The Cardinals went 18-8 overall.
Haaven, a Munich student, is also one of the state’s top volleyball players.
