Muriel E. Trappen, 93, Devils Lake, ND, passed away Saturday, Nov. 22, 2025, at CHI St. Alexius Hospital in Devils Lake with family surrounding her.
She was born Aug. 26, 1932, to Harley and Margaret (Kent) Loop in Minnesota. She graduated from Campbell High School in 1950 where she had been a cheerleader. On Sep. 11, 1951, she married Richard Trappen, Campbell, MN. Muriel worked at the Canteena in Breckinridge, MN, for a few years and was also a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. Later she started working at the Green Lantern Café as a cook in Hardwick, MN, and in Lakota she also worked as a cook for The Wheel Inn, SunLac Inn and the school. She was well known for her outstanding cooking!
In her free time she enjoyed sewing, painting the wood crafts that Richard would build, bingo, watching game shows but it was her family that she enjoyed the most. She also enjoyed dancing up a storm with Richard and they had even danced on the Lawrence Welk show.
Muriel is survived by her children: Joe Trappen, Upland, CA; Peggy (Roger) Peters, Devils Lake ND; Michael (Kari) Trappen, Beulah, ND; Pat (Vicki) Trappen, Wahpeton, ND; Jon (Dawn) Trappen, Ramsey, MN; Annette (Todd) Handeland, Dayton, MN; Tony Trappen, Fargo, ND; Grandchildren; Jeremiah Broughton, Melissa Peters, Troy (Kortney) Peters, Paulette Peters, Wendy (Andy) Gendreau, Travis Trappen, Jessica (Carl) Springer, Richard P. (Ashely) Trappen, Sam (Aericka) Trappen, Ben (Cassie) Trappen, Zach Trappen, Lindsey (Michael) Peterson, Heather Biwer, Corbin (Seniada) Handeland, Emma (Ben) Morrison, Ian Handeland, Kyler Handeland, 25 great grandchildren and survived by her brother-in-law, Bruce Wallace.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Richard; her parents, Harley and Margaret Loop; sisters Delores (Melvin) Westerbur, Virginia (Norman) Bacon, Alta (Fred) Hoepfer, Donna Westbrook; In-laws; Jake and Rose Trappen; sister-in-law Mary (Leo) Cooper, Roseann Wallace, Irene Twiss and grandson David Peters.
Mass of Christian Burial was on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Lakota, ND.
Visitation with a rosary was at the church also on Tuesday.
Burial was at the Lakota Cemetery.
