DEVILS LAKE, N.D. – In the wake of a recent series of car break-ins, residents are advised to observe standard precautions.
According to Detective Sue Schwab of the Devils Lake Police Department, there have several car break-ins within the past week, particularly on the north end of town, “where vehicles had been entered or attempted to be entered.”
Schwab added that there had been slightly more car break-ins a couple of weeks earlier over Easter weekend. In most cases, the vehicles were unlocked.
“We don’t have a lot of property loss at this point,” Schwab said, adding that several stolen items have since been recovered.
However, the detective issued a reminder to all residents to lock their vehicles—ensure that all doors are locked, with windows rolled up to deter thieves.
Other standard precautions include the following:
- · Remove valuables – keep valuable items, cash or weapons in your domicile whenever possible or at least out of sight to prevent them from being seen as tempting targets.
- · Park in well-lit areas – choose parking spots in well-lit and highly visible areas to reduce the likelihood of break-ins.
- · Use anti-theft devices – activate car alarms or anti-theft devices if equipped to provide an additional layer of security.
- · Report suspicious activity – immediately report any suspicious activity to the police to help prevent break-ins.
