A Message from Garcia: The 1873 Agreement, Part 2

The history and culture of the Spirit Lake Dakota

in

This is part 2 of a story begun on Tuesday, April 7 on p. 5 of the Devils Lake Journal.

I looked at two typed copies of the 1873 Amended Agreement for comparison only to discover there is a difference in the number, of the chief men who signed with an “X”. So I simply added the extra names to my list. I was able to read many of the names, and I corrected the spelling. Other names were so badly spelled, I consulted a Dakota – English dictionary, which helped in some cases. I then went over the original 1,200 male and female Dakota reservation residents. Again I was able to recheck the spelling of the names. However you will see some names are unknown. Hopefully in the future, other books and manuscripts may reveal the identity of the misspelled individuals. I could imagine if the Devils Lake leaders had a lawyer, the agreement would have been redrawn with the proper spelling of signatories.

Now I have listed the names exactly as written but have added their enrollment number preceding the name. At the time of the 1873 Agreement, Dakota didn’t have an enrollment number, like our Social Security Number. They were given a number after they were allotted their individual land parcel. That is another topic.

The list of names are as follows. Each name starts with an enrollment number, which I obtained from the Tribal Reality office at Fort Totten, North Dakota. Number 303 means Spirit Lake. If there is no number before the name, it means they probably died before allotment. Next the name is spelled correctly in bold black ink, with their birth and death date, if known. If there is no number preceding the name, it means I could not match the misspelled name to any records.
