Marcia Guderjahn was an avid member of Lake Region Quilt Guild but passed away way too early from cancer on Feb. 7, 2022. In her memory, her family donated money to the Lake Region Quilt Guild to do something in her memory.
At the time, we were talking about doing a quilt for Veterans and decided that this was going to be done in Marcia’s honor, calling it “Marcia’s Project.” We made and presented our first Veteran quilt to Brian Erickson, son of one of our guild members, Betty Jo Erickson.
It was decided to do another Veteran quilt this year as the Guderjahn family wanted to continue funding the project.
Several of the guild members have been involved in this year’s project from picking out the pattern, fabric, sewing the blocks, sewing the blocks together, quilting it, binding it, creating and sewing on the label, all the while remembering Marcia and her infectious laugh.
This year’s recipient is a longtime Devils Lake Army National Guard veteran, Larry Liere. His wife, Karen, was an avid sewer and, like us, quilting was her passion.
Larry trained at Fort Leonardwood, MO and Fort Dix, NJ. During Vietnam he went to an 18 week training course on learning how to adjust mechanical and electronic sightings but he never served overseas. He was scheduled to go to Germany but he and most of his family came down with Hepatitis A and he never left the U.S.
He served his country with his training skills from within the states. He served for 37 years from 1960 to 1997 and we thank him for his service.
Members of the Guild presented Larry with the Veteran Quilt at our November meeting on Nov. 8, 2025. Ryan Guderjahn, Marcia’s son, was present via FaceTime for the presentation.
