The Lure Of Big Fish Stories

I’m comfortable considering myself “old.” I remember when North Dakota had a closed fishing season, I bought my fishing license at a gas station, with a trout stamp, and signed my name on the side so as not to mark the stamp’s beautiful artwork.

A Message from Garcia: Hidatsa Burial Site

A Hidatsa man was accidently killed with his own gun while visiting the Dakota long ago. No one I interviewed could guess at the date of this occurrence. The Hidatsa (Red Willow People) lived here at Miniwakan Oyanke (Devils Lake) years ago. The Hidatsa name for the lake is MiriXopash Holy Water). Some anthropologists say they were “born” below the waters of our Holy Lake, and use the date 1500 as to their departure. Their leader had a dream to move west to the Missouri River. At the start of the Reservation Period when peace was established between various warring tribes, the Hidatsa began to visit the place of birth.

Remembering the Wells County Free Fair in the 1950’s and 60’s

There’s something special about a North Dakota summer especially if you’re young farm boys growing up in Wells County in the 1950’s and 60’s. Besides helping with the farm work there was also gopher hunting and horseback riding. So much to do, so little time!

A Message from Garcia: Sheyenne River Cheyenne

The Sheyenne River forms the south border of the Spirit Lake Reservation. What does the name Sheyenne / Cheyenne have to do with the Spirit Lake Dakota? The answer: on the south bank of this river was a Cheyenne earth lodge village near Lisbon, North Dakota. The Cheyenne people today live in the states of Montana and Oklahoma. The Cheyenne name for these indigenous people is not their official name. Their name for themselves is Tsistsistas (Beautiful People).
