Fargo – The American Legion Auxiliary, Department of North Dakota installed Candace Berg as President of the American Legion Auxiliary Department of North Dakota at their 104th ND Department Convention on Sunday, June 29, 2025. Candace will be ratified at the National Convention in Tampa, FL, in August 2025.

Candace, a 49-year member of the Sidney Britsch Unit 268 of York, ND, joined the American Legion Auxiliary under her father Harland Berg, a Vietnam veteran who served in the US Army.

Prior to becoming president, Candace’s roles with the ND Department have been as Vice President, President-Elect, and membership chairman. She is proud to be a part of the American Legion Family and to have several family members who are part of the York unit, including her mother, Viola, her daughter Haylee, and her sisters.

Candace’s Department cabinet for 2025-2026 are: Sandy Smith (President-Elect), Shelley Schuster, (Vice President), Marcy Schmidt (Secretary), Susan Degner (Treasurer), Holly Eslinger (Parliamentarian), Virginia Satrom, (Chaplain), Carrie Heinz (Historian), Judy Twete (National Executive Committeeman), and (Finance Committee) Sandra Petermann, Georgette Dorval, and Jeannie Roman.

The American Legion Auxiliary Programs and Chairmen under Candace’s term are: Chilly Goodman (AEF-Auxiliary Emergency Fund), Arliss Koski (Americanism), Jill Carstens (Children and Youth), Diane Kraemer (Constitution & Bylaws) Lynn Tomlinson (Education), Jane Schoonover (Junior Activities), Alicia Roman (Leadership),

Carma Hanson (Legislative), Carol Wolf and Cheryl Gustafson (Poppy Co-Chairmen), Sandy Smith and Shelley Schuster (Membership Co-Chairmen), Marcy Schmidt and Shauna Dubuque (Public Relations), LoAnn Dick (National Security), as well as members serving in Community Service, Girls State Board and VA&R Representatives.

Candace’s theme for the year is: “To serve and protect, you answered the call; Salute to our veterans, we honor you all.”

Candace had a President Project pin designed and made to represent her Presidency as well as to raise funds toward her Presidents Project. Candace’s projects for this year are: The Honor Flight Network for Eastern/Western North Dakota and the NDSU Bison Strides Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies Program for veterans and their families. Candace’s pin is available for purchase for $5 until sold out. Additional donations toward her two President Projects are welcomed.

Candace lives in Devils Lake and is the proud parent of three children, Tylor, Haylee, and Landyn. Candace is currently employed with the Lake Region District Health Unit as the Environmental Health Director for a 7-county region. In her spare time, Candace enjoys photography (IceBerg Images by Candace), drawing, exploring nature, spending time with her animals, volunteering for good causes, and spending time with loved ones. Candace is also involved with Ramsey County 4-H and the VFW Auxiliary to Post 756 in Devils Lake.

Candace hopes to leave a positive impact doing her part to serve our veterans and their families across the state and continue to impart a sense of pride for this organization and what it represents. Candace is looking forward to her year as North Dakota’s 2025-2026 American Legion Auxiliary Department President.
