Fifth Graders learn about safety on the farm and more
North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension–Ramsey County was proud to host its third annual Progressive Agriculture Safety Day on April 3, 2025, at the Memorial Building in Devils Lake. The event welcomed 157 fifth-grade students from Central Middle School and St. Joseph Catholic School to a fun and educational experience focused on safety, health, and wellness.

Grace and Gratitude Wellness Joins Growing Health Hub at City Plaza
What was once the Walmart building in Devils Lake has taken on an entirely new identity under the leadership of City Plaza CEO Reg Herman. Transformed into a vibrant community center, the space is now unrecognizable as a former big-box store. Herman recently shared with the Journal that it had long been his dream for the facility to become a place dedicated to healing, health, and wellness. While the transformation hasn’t unfolded exactly as he once imagined, that vision is clearly coming to life.
Building Leaders Day attracts speakers from all walks of life
Building Leaders Day at Devils Lake High School isn’t just for students to hear about jobs or careers. It’s an opportunity to hear about life lessons, perseverance, and motivation. An annual event, students on Thursday got to hear from speakers from all walks of life. Some were from the army, some were former graduates, and one was even a current student.
DL Cars donates to Youth Sports
Lake Chevrolet GMC- Devils Lake Cars partnered with Devils Lake Youth Football on the Chevy Youth Sports program, a partnership program built to position Chevrolet as the Official Vehicle of Youth Sports while providing an opportunity for local youth sports leagues to grow.
National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week held earlier this month
National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is a time to recognize the first-first responders. Many times they are the forgotten bunch. They are only a voice. With the information they are given (or sometimes even nothing) dispatchers help assess emergencies and help those who are in immediate need. They are the ones who connect us to police, firefighters, EMS, and those who are the ones who respond to an emergency call first. On April 16, the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center held an open house where members of the public could meet and see what dispatchers do daily.
ND Outdoors: Early Spring Fishing
It was March 7 when my old friend and game warden Cory Erck called on a Friday afternoon. While I was working indoors at a sport show he was out patrolling his district. After the usual pleasantries we compared notes of the boat ramps open on the Missouri River, to snow geese showing up on the state line. That day, spring was definitely here. But it didn’t last.

Well known for their excellent drinks, great food, and games, many thought that Thirsty’s would just stay empty for a long time. But one man came along and decided to save it.
