It’s official: Devils Lake girls’ hockey will be the No. 7 seed in the state tournament.
The Firebirds had been in the No. 6 spot for a long time, and even had a chance to get bumped up to No. 5 going into their last two games. But they lost both games, dropping them to No. 7. Still, the top eight seeds get in, so they’ll have a chance to compete in the state tournament regardless.
Devils Lake will play the No. 2 seed, Fargo North/South, rather than No. 3 Mandan, who they would have played as the No. 6 seed. The Firebirds lost both matchups with the Spruins during the regular season: 7-3 on Dec. 15 and 3-2 on Jan. 30.
Devils Lake may be the No. 7 seed, but it has the top two players in the state in points. Ashlyn Abrahamson led the state with 45 goals; nobody else even had 30. Her point total of 61 was 18 higher than the next-best player in the state, which was Devils Lake’s Siri Olson. Olson led the state with 26 assists.
The Firebirds’ first game is scheduled for Thursday at 5 p.m. at Scheels Arena in Fargo.
