Rudy met his beloved, Dolores Beck, in Devils Lake. After converting to the Catholic faith, they were united in the Sacrament of Marriage on June 18, 1958, at St. Joseph Church in Devils Lake. They lived, worked, and raised their sons in Devils Lake through the years. Dolores entered eternal life on April 26, 1998.

Living within 3 blocks of the fire station, he was always the first one there. He also was a life member of the North Dakota Fire Chiefs Association. He enjoyed playing dice games, especial 6-5-4 as well as making Norwegian delicacies, passing these skills onto his children and grandchildren.
