Noah Clooten benefitted from the NDNA Foundation Collegiate Internship this past summer at the Devils Lake Journal.

About a dozen high school and college students each year are paid to work in local news rooms across the state through the North Dakota Newspaper Association Education Foundation (NDNAEF).

Newspapers hosting high school students for the equivalent of four weeks of full-time work and college students working the equivalent of eight weeks of work, receive stipends to help pay for the student’s time on the job.

NDNAEF has invested between $30,000 and $55,000 per year toward these stipends to help insure a new generation of journalists and support staff is ready to serve local newspapers. Internships may focus on any aspect of the news operation, from reporting to graphic design, photography, or promotions.

In addition to being paid for their time, students are able to develop a portfolio of published work to show to future employers.

The Devils Lake Journal benefitted from this very project that paid for Noah Clooten as a collegiate intern this past summer. He provided photos and videos, including drone footage, as well as helped to train current DLJ photographer, Cameron Carlson.

Students wishing to apply for an internship in 2026 should contact [email protected].
