The Devils Lake Park Board held their regular meeting on Thursday, Feb. 22. Here are some highlights from the meeting:

KJ Greywater was present to talk about the Spirit Lake Spring Powwow on May 4 and 5. Greywater said previous venues like Spirit Lake Casino and Four Winds High School were too small for the crowd that was attracted. He asked the park board if Burdick Arena could be the location for the next powwow. “This is a great opportunity for Devils Lake and Spirit Lake to mend a relationship culturally and economically,” Greywater said. Dennis Nybo said he would get together with Greywater and work something out.

Devis Lake Rodeo Club President Brandon Padilla was present to discuss having the rodeo back on September 6, 7, and 8. The board had some concerns due to floor damage from making the arena into a rodeo. Padilla said he would work with the contractor to make sure that doesn’t happen again. The board said if the coolant line was damaged it could take out the ice rink and the damages would be financially astronomical. Moving the rodeo dance as well was brought up to alleviate problems with alcohol on school grounds and inappropriate behavior on buses. The park board said as long as they were guaranteed that as long as the rodeo didn’t cause the same problems as the last time it was held, they would be okay with the return of the rodeo.

Devils Lake Public Schools Activities Director Jason Wiberg was present to talk about the boy’s and girl’s high school golf. Wiberg said they were looking to not pay rent or charge nonmembers for the season for use of the golf course. “Golf is something they can do the rest of their lives. It’s for our kids,” Wiberg said. Kale Stromme of the park board said “It’s an easy decision for me. We need youth to be golfing. It translates them to playing forever. When they play now it leads to less abuse on the grounds.” Stromme said he would be okay with waiving fees for club rental use and membership. Board member Jamie Beck suggested only charging for a deposit just in case some gold clubs get broken and for a golf course etiquette class. The park board approved the requests.

Dockside update. The board approved the employee classification.

The board also approved to have Dakota Sound System install the sound equipment in the building. Christy Remmick, Dockside Entertainment and Community Engagement Manager said “Sound and music is important for the building and necessary for paging for lost kids and staff communication.”

Senior lounge furniture was approved and Dockside is still looking for simulator bay furniture.

For concessions equipment, Dockside is looking for a pizza oven, a warmer for pretzels, nachos and pizza, and looking to purchase cleaning supplies for bathrooms.

The board approved purchasing 10 dedication benches for Dockside.
