NDSU Extension- Ramsey County will be having the annual Ranchers’ Night Out on Thursday, Nov. 30 at the Lake Region Livestock sale barn located east of Devils Lake (8314 Hwy 2). AgCounty Farm Credit Services sponsored the meal which starts at 5:15 p.m. with the program to follow at 6 p.m.

With the help of local ranchers, the program topics were decided to include a cattle market outlook with Tim Petry, livestock economist at North Dakota State University, and a discussion of Livestock Risk Protection/Pasture Rangeland Forage Insurance with Curt Christofferson and Gabe Power at NAU.

Petry, a presenter at this event, says, “Market outlook and livestock risk protection are huge drivers for profitable backgrounding.” Backgrounding is the term used when feeding calves after weaning to allow growth, improve animal health, transition to different feed rations, and delay marketing. Usually, backgrounding occurs during the cold winter months and does not incorporate grazing.
