DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (Feb. 2, 2026) – Correctional Officer Justin Smith was found dead by apparent suicide at age 38 on Saturday, Jan. 31 at a local motel.
According to the press release issued by Lake Region Law Enforcement Center Director Starr Klemetstrud, Smith served the Correctional Facility since 2017, and during that time, he was known as a dependable team member and respected colleague. In September 2023, he received the agency’s Lifesaving Award for “his quick action, courage and commitment to the safety and wellbeing of others.”
“Officer Smith’s service and dedication to this profession made a meaningful difference in our facility and in the lives of fellow staff,” Klemetstrud said. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and coworkers during this incredibly difficult time. This loss is being felt across our entire agency. Support resources and peer services are now available to staff.”
“At this time, we respectfully ask the public and media to honor the privacy of Officer Smith’s family,” Klemetstrud added. “Officer Smith’s service and contributions will not be forgotten.”
