DEVILS LAKE, N.D. — A man died Wednesday morning, Jan. 14, after becoming trapped in a grain elevator pit near Devils Lake, N.D.

According to press releases from the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Department, at approximately 9:24 a.m., emergency crews from their department, Devils Lake Rural Fire Department and Lake Region Ambulance Service responded to the CHS Elevator on Hwy. 2 following reports of a man who had fallen and became trapped in the corn stored within the elevator pit.

Despite rescue efforts from first responders, 34-year-old Enrique Perez from Leeds, N.D. was pronounced dead at the scene.

When reached for comment, Krysta Larson, CHS director of reputation, content and channels, said. “Our thoughts are with the employee’s family and friends during this difficult time. CHS is cooperating with authorities responding to the incident.”

“The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and community affected by this tragedy,” said Ramsey County Sheriff Bryan Lang.

Preliminary investigation indicates the incident was accidental, with no evidence of foul play. It was determined that Perez wasn’t wearing the proper safety harness when he entered the grain pit, prompting the sheriff’s office to remind all agricultural workers to follow grain bin safety protocols and always use the proper safety equipment.

The incident remains under investigation.
