Lake Region State College’s annual Key Event silent and live auction took place on Friday, Oct. 24, at 5:30 p.m. on campus in the Hofstad Ag Center. This year’s theme focused on “The Great Outdoors.”
Using various concepts since the event’s inception that have included last year’s circus motif “Under the Big Top,” and time-travel trips back to the 1980s and 1920s, the event has raised money for over 30 years which LRSC’s Community College Foundation uses to support student needs.
Promoted this year as “an evening inspired by crackling campfires, good company, and starry skies,” attendees dressed to match the theme as with previous gatherings; some wore camouflage, while others dressed up as wildlife. Following a suggestion from her father, Rachel Schindele wore a trashcan costume while sister Veranna Schindele, mother Trish Schindele and friend Laurel Brown dressed as scavenging raccoons. Colden Hutton and Steve Waddell attended the function as elderly widower Carl Fredricksen and Wilderness Explorer scout Russell (with plenty of balloons for their costumes) from the 2009 Disney Pixar movie “Up.”
The cost for attending the event was $60 per person. Starting with a social hour and silent auction bidding, the event featured a camp-style dinner of beef tips, mashed potatoes, sweet corn, fresh garden salad and a spread of classic outdoor desserts. Entertainment was provided by the local band The Thicklets, followed by the live auction, along with a variety of raffles throughout the evening.
The auctions featured a wide array of items for bidding, including two tickets for a show featuring ventriloquist comedian Jeff Dunham, a half-hour airplane ride around Devils Lake, a private shopping party at Camora Clothing, a portable generator, furniture, artwork, sports packages and memorabilia, and other products.
