Who’s running and why?
Alex Belazs
Alex Belazs has led an interesting life. Though he is retired now he has decided to run for the lone North Dakota seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
He and his wife, Cindy, live on a farm actually closer to Considine, approximately 15 miles northeast of Cando, ND. They stepped up to buy the family farm and got it by being the highest bidder in 2002. They’ve done a great deal of home improvement and renovation to it since then.
Belazs spent 18 years in the U.S. Air Force and has also worked in places like the Hague, Pakistan, Columbia, Nicaragua and the Southern Border of the U.S. and Washington D.C., among other places.
He says his wife is much smarter than he is, speaks five languages fluently and joined him in working for the foreign service. Kind of like a Mr. and Mrs. .007, only without the Hollywood influence. [my words not his]
Belazs says he is a conservative and is running because he wants to represent North Dakota in the U.S. Congress. There is only one representative at large for the whole state. He says they are grateful for their life here in North Dakota and pledges to listen to the people he is elected to serve.
Donna Henderson
Donna Henderson grew up in Munich, ND where her dad had a third generation Main Street business – “Schuler Hardware and Implement Co.” She attended college at NDSCS in Wahpeton, ND, and earned a degree in Dental Hygiene.
She says, “Husband, Paul, and I will celebrate our 43rd wedding anniversary next month. We raised six children on our family farm near Calvin, ND, and now have 11 grandchildren so far! “
Henderson adds, “I am running for re-election to work for the people of our district, with my goal of keeping big government from interfering in their lives any more than necessary. I want to protect their rights and freedoms, reduce government spending so they can keep more of their money for their families, and reduce government regulations that are cumbersome in so many areas of our lives. I believe that government should work for the people, not the other way around. Some people are saying I have an agenda, not so. I have Traditional Conservative Republican principles that I follow. I believe I am the right choice for this position and I hope the voters of District 15 feel the same way.”
Kathy Frelich
Kathy Frelich was born in Fargo, N.D. Her dad came to N.D. to attend college and to play hockey for UND. “They taught me you can do anything,” she recalled. That’s how she ended up running for office in the first place.
Her parents were from Canada. She was raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba but moved to the Lake Region in 1987 to attend Lake Region State College and met her husband, Michael, who lived in rural Crary. They have been married 34 years, have three daughters and six grandchildren.
“I love the Lake Region,” Frelich stated adding, “I’m a public servant and this is important work.”
Frelich says it is very important to provide information to people so they know what is going on around the region. She says that is at the heart of her work in the legislature. She adds that as a farmer’s wife, she understands the situation many of the farmers around Devils Lake experience with flooding and inundated property. Nothing is simple about it. She says that’s why she got on the Ag Water Committee as they study the roads and farmland impacted by over 30 years of flooding in the Devils Lake Basin and beyond.
Another concern she wishes to continue to study, if she is re-elected, is the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center and finding the funding assistance in loans or grants available to help the community.
