Donna Mae Schell passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 29. She was born on Jan. 31, 1931, to Albert and Thilda (Erickson) Knutson, and graduated from Leeds High School in 1948.
Donna lived her life with grace, style, and a deep dedication to her family and community. Known for her poise and polished appearance, she carried herself with a natural elegance that left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
She began her career in Devils Lake as a bookkeeper at Montgomery Ward while also working evenings at the Ranch Supper Club for 25 years. She later worked as a cashier at Lake Region Junior College and served as the assistant manager at Herbst Women’s Fashion in the Holiday Mall—an especially fitting role for someone so naturally attuned to fashion and presentation.
In 1975, Donna and her son Doug purchased Adeline’s, where she devoted 50 years of her life. Whether helping customers or visiting with friends, Donna was always impeccably dressed, warm, and welcoming—a true fixture of the community whose presence brought both style and kindness into the store each day.
On August 22, 1949, Donna married George Schell. Together they raised four children: Doug, Cathy, Chris, and Mike.
Donna shared nearly 40 wonderful years with Les Riggin. Together they enjoyed wintering in Arizona, golfing, and spending time with many dear, lifelong friends. No matter the setting—from the golf course to a casual outing—Donna was always put together, reflecting her lifelong pride in looking her best.
Donna had a deep love for golf and spent many years at the Devils Lake Country Club, where she participated in tournaments and the Wednesday Ladies Day league. She also loved shopping in downtown Devils Lake, where she could often be found selecting just the right outfit or accessory. Her son Doug fondly recalled that she never returned from lunch or the bank without a package in hand. In her younger years, she cherished sunny days spent relaxing at Wood Lake, always with the same effortless sense of style that defined her life.
Donna is survived by her three sons, Doug (Pam), Chris Schell, and Mike (Bette); her brother, Roger Knutson; her son-in-law, Terry Eisenzimmer; grandsons, Jeff and Tim; her sister-in-law, Marlene Schell; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Harold, Delores, Alton, and Shirley; and her beloved daughter, Cathy.
Donna will be remembered for her strong work ethic, her warmth, her timeless elegance, and the care she brought to every detail of her life. She had a gift for making ordinary days feel special—and she did it all with style.
Mass of Christian Burial for Donna will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with Reverend Michael Schommer celebrating the Mass.
A time of fellowship will follow the funeral Mass at the Parish Center, Devils Lake.
