Have you visited every town or city in North Dakota? One man is chronicling every incorporated town and city for a guidebook to be published later this year. Nebraskan Seth Varner, 24, has written guidebooks for South Dakota, Kansas, and other states in the Midwest.

On Friday, May 10, he visited Devils Lake which was town number 98 of 355. Varner visited Old Main Street Cafe, Ruger Park, Graham’s Island State Park, and many other places to chronicle for the guidebook.

“When I was a kid I wanted to go to every town in Nebraska,” he said. While in college, he decided to do just that. His mom suggested he share the photos he took on Facebook. His posts got thousands of views. Then he got messages suggesting he make a book of the places he visited.

The first place he touched down in North Dakota was Fairmount in Richland County. The population is a little over 300.

“No matter how small the population is there is always points of pride within the community still,” he said. “You’ll find that every community has some cool history behind it and neat things to see and do.”

When Varner met his way to Devils Lake, what stood out for him was the business district. “For being a town of 7,000 people… I’m surprised at how big the business district is,” he said.

Varner could have just written travel guides for the big cities but he has found his niche writing about places in the midwest. “In small towns, the community sticks together. Each one has their very unique history.”
