There’s a busy weekend ahead in the Devils Lake area and this story will share a few of its highlights.
1. On Saturday, July 22 there will be the 10th annual Levi Leibfried and Eric Kaeding Memorial ATV Fun Run leaving Penn, ND, at 12 p.m. Noon. Food will be served at 6 p.m. until gone and at 8 p.m. there will be a street dance at the Buckhorn Bar with music provided by B52 Entertainment. There is free camping available on a first come basis, both campers and tents are welcome but there are no water or sewer services. Contact Kim at 701-351-0809 with questions. 2. On Saturday, July 22 and Sunday, July 23 is the 15th annual Fishing Has No Boundaries event. This year’s event is dedicated to Darwin Vannett. The event is held at the Spirit Lake Casino & Resort with registration starting at 8 a.m. Saturday by the ramp in the Spirit Lake Marina. Fishing begins at 9 a.m. on the lake with a sack lunch and bathroom break at 11:30 a.m. More fishing at 1:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. then grilling out under the tents from 5:30 – 7 p.m. Sunday’s schedule begins at 8 a.m. with loading the boats and pontoons, fishing from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and at 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. there will be a fish fry and awards.
About Fishing Has No Boundaries, “Most of us think that going fishing is as easy as a walk down to the lake…but for over 56 million Americans with disabilities, it’s just not that easy.” Curently there are 18 chapters of Fishing Has No Boundaries in nine states. Devils Lake’s chapter was started in 2008 by Merlyn Greene and Gabriel “Monty” Montaniel, there were two participants. It was the only chapter in North Dakota, and still is. The second year there were 10 participants. By 2012 there were 25 participants. 2016 there were 45, 2017 saw 51 participants, 2018 – 57 participants, 2019 – 52 participants, 2020’s event was cancelled due to Covid. In 2021 there were 62 participants, five pontoons, 25 boats and 200+ fish were caught Saturday! The 2022 event had 56 participants, five pontoons and 22 boats. Volunteers are always welcome! 3. Also on Saturday, July 22 is the 8th annual RibFest in Roosevelt Park where teams vie for bragging rights to having the best ribs around! According to Suzie Kenner from the Devils Lake Chamber of Commerce the ND Pork Council donated 1,000 lbs of ribs for the event and she’s hopeful that everyone will come out this year. Pre-tickets for the public go on sale at 2 p.m. but judging begins at 3 p.m. and food is served at 5 p.m. until gone. Make a day of it! The Fort Totten Little Theater will perform “Footloose” at 10 a.m. (and again at 10 p.m. later that evening) There will be a Kid Zone, live entertainment from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., the Ice Cream Truck will be on hand as will concessions available all through the day. There will be a volleyball tournament, a cornhole tournament and a beer garden. Roosevelt Park is the place to be on a sunny summer day!
