Inmate with Ties to Devils Lake Escapes Bismarck Prison

BISMARCK, ND – Authorities are searching for Roman James Poitra, an inmate who walked away from a minimum-security correctional facility in Bismarck, ND, and may be headed for the Devils Lake area.

The North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DOCR) reported the walk away on Nov. 8 at 11:19 a.m. from Missouri River Correctional Center (MRCC), an unfenced, minimum-security facility for inmates with minimum custody requirements, located in Bismarck. Poitra, age 38, is described as Native American, 5 feet 11 inches, 260 pounds with brown eyes, shoulder-length dark hair, and glasses.

According to the DOCR press release, Poitra is serving a sentence for possession of certain materials prohibited in Cass County and a violation for failure to register. He was scheduled for release on January 2028. Poitra has connections to the Devils Lake area and may be traveling in that direction.

The DOCR contacted the North Dakota Highway Patrol dispatch as soon as the walk away was discovered and the MRCC facility grounds were searched.
