FORT TOTTEN, N.D. — The extensive search for 20-year-old Danica “Tynee” White has ended in tragedy with the discovery of her remains. According to an official press release from the Spirit Lake Tribe posted on their Facebook community page, she “was discovered and recovered from the waters shortly before 3 p.m. on Nov. 6.”

Only hours earlier that same day before White’s remains were found, Spirit Lake Tribe Public Relations Specialist Vicki Alberts said that her family had continued to hold out hope of her safe return.

“This was not the resolution we hoped for, but we are committed to providing support for Danica’s family during this incredibly difficult time,” said Joseph “JJ” Jetty, Spirit Lake Fire Chief and Incident Commander. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.”

Tribe Chairwoman Lonna Jackson-Street reflected on the community’s strength and shared commitment to supporting White’s family. “Our hearts are heavy with this news,” she said. “Danica was a vibrant young woman with her whole life ahead of her. We ask everyone to keep her family in your thoughts and prayers and to respect their privacy as they grieve.”

During the five-day search, approximately 15,000 acres had been meticulously covered with the assistance of multiple local, state, federal and tribal agencies as well as the collaboration of various teams, including MHA Emergency Operations, Turtle Mountain Search and Rescue, and the North Dakota Highway Patrol, among others.

According to initial reports, White was last heard from on Saturday, Nov. 1 at approximately 6 a.m. Her last known location was established through a 911 call in which she indicated she needed assistance, prompting an immediate response from local authorities; she had been last seen near BIA 25, wearing black pants, a black sweater, and gray/white shoes.

The Tribe thanked everyone who participated in the search, “Your dedication to our community and to Danica speaks volumes about our strength and unity in times of sorrow.”

White’s funeral will be held next week. To support the family during this difficult time, a benefit bank account has been established at Gate City Bank in Devils Lake, under the title “Benefit of Danica Tynee White.” Donations can be made in-person or via mail at the following address: Gate City Bank, Attn: Benefit of Danica Tynee White, 601 4th St. NE Devils Lake, ND 58301.
