Fort Totten, ND – The Spirit Lake Tribe proudly announces that Sarah O’Connell, RN, BSN, Immunization Nurse with the Spirit Lake Early Childhood Tracking Program, has been recognized as North Dakota’s 2025 CDC Childhood Immunization Champion.
This annual award, presented by the Association of Immunization Managers in partnership with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), honors leaders across the nation who demonstrate excellence in promoting vaccinations and preventing disease. Only one individual per state is chosen, and Ms. O’Connell was selected for her extraordinary service to Spirit Lake families.
“Sarah exemplifies what it means to be an immunization champion—she meets families where they are, listens with compassion, and ensures no child is left behind when it comes to preventive care,” said a representative from the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services, who nominated her for the award.
Through her work at Spirit Lake Early Childhood Tracking, Ms. O’Connell:
• Conducts developmental screenings and immunization checks for children birth to age five.
• Offers culturally sensitive education and referrals for well-child visits, dental care, and behavioral health. • Coordinates transportation for families needing access to medical appointments.
• Leads innovative outreach, including mobile clinics and partnerships with schools and Head Start programs.
• Since its founding in the 1990s, the Spirit Lake Early Childhood Tracking Program has served as a vital resource for families, ensuring children’s health and developmental needs are met. Last year alone, the program provided over 250 nursing visits, 170 health tracks assessments, and more than 140 transportation rides for families.
“Healthy children are the foundation of strong communities,” said Program Director Beverly Greywater. “Sarah’s work embodies our mission—to evaluate, identify, and support the healthy development of every child at Spirit Lake.”
The Spirit Lake Tribe extends congratulations to Sarah O’Connell for her outstanding contributions and thanks the Early Childhood Tracking staff for their dedication to the well-being of all Spirit Lake children.
