Colleen Graue receives the Sense of Wonder Impact Award
One week ago today marked the first day of the 14th year of the Outdoor Learning Program at White Horse Hill.
“I am humbled to have been awarded the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2025 National Sense of Wonder Award. The Sense of Wonder Impact Award is a career recognition for an employee with 10 or more years of service advancing interpretation and environmental education. I did not accomplish this alone!” states recipient Colleen Graue who directs the Visitors Services for the White Horse Hill National Game Preserve.
The national write up for the award also recognizes the Devils Lake Public School District.
Graue has created integrated outdoor learning activities with the Devils Lake Public School District for 5th grade students who learn at White Horse Hill National Game Preserve every day. Graue co-created a highly valued, multi-disciplinary curriculum which has resulted in support from the school system to provide dedicated funds to ensure bussing, cleaning costs, and supplies are covered. The program has attracted additional educators interested in implementing a similar program for nearby middle school students from Tate Topa Tribal School. These long-term relationships have created a legacy of outdoor learning in the community.
“Over the years, each person involved has played a meaningful role in shaping the Outdoor Learning Program at White Horse Hill into what it is today. I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to all who have contributed to its success,” Graue stated.
Adding, “A special thank you goes to Steve Swiontek (DLPS) and Roger Holevoet (USFWS) for their vision and belief in what could be possible. The foundation for this program was laid as early as 2005 through their initial discussions and planning.”
“To the inaugural 5th Grade Team (2012) — Marsha Samson, Marie Snyder, John McLaurin, and Brad Larson — whose work during the first five years was critical in shaping the development and design of the program.”
“Thank you to the successional staff who continued to nurture and grow the program: Kristi Bommersbach, Maari Hanson, Vanessa McLaughlin, Anna Shorey, Jayden Hunt, and Dave Kosmatka.”
“Plus acknowledgment is also due to our leadership partners:DLPS Superintendents: Scott Privratsky, Matt Bakke, and Ned Clooten; USFWS Refuge Managers: Roger Holevoet, Matt Sprenger, and Dave Azure; CMS Principals and Assistant Principals: Josh Johnson, Jared Schlenker, Dan Kaffar, and Jake Wateland.”
“I am also grateful to the Devils Lake School Board and the Friends of White Horse Hill for their continued support and commitment.”
“This program is a testament to what collaboration, vision, and dedication can achieve. Thank you all.” Colleen Graue,
Visitor Service Manager, White Horse Hill NGP, St. Michael, ND.
