In just a few days the Edmore School District will be no more. Just before its last graduation, the school district held its graduation banquet on Sunday, May 19. The school had a small staff and 17 enrolled students. While families and friends were glad to see the only two seniors of 2024 graduating, there was a somberness in the air. The school district which has been around 104 years will see its last two high school students graduate. Other students will be enrolled elsewhere.
During the banquet, supper was served, and plenty of awards were passed out to students and staff. Such awards included in proficiency in math, improvement in learning, and highest achiever award. Staff were given artwork made from metal.
Tammy Berg, a 1974 graduate of Edmore, gave a speech talking about her time at the school.
Rayce Worley is one of two of the last graduating high school students. He will be going to UND to study business. A star athlete, he broke a scoring record of 41 during basketball. “I never thought the day would come,” he said.
The other graduate, Alexis Wilkie also said it’s “sad” to be a part of the last. She said she’s going to be “working and might go to college later in life.”
One kindergarten student, Haisley Boehmer, also graduated.
Frank Schill, superintendent of Edmore Public Schools said it was “bittersweet” seeing the school come down to its final days. “The kids will do fine,” he said. “It’s always sad when a school comes to the end, when a school comes to the end of its life… I am confident [the students] will be fine. That makes me feel good.”
Schill said in his 38 years of education “It’s been the most rewarding location” he’s worked at, adding, “It’s a unique experience for me as a professional.”
