Art Bergstrom and Bert Baldwin established Lake Chevrolet Motor Company in 1923, which has now evolved into Devils Lake Cars. As we approach the momentous occasion of the company’s 100th anniversary in 2023, we invite everyone to join us in the celebration of this remarkable milestone on June 30th at Roosevelt Park. The festivities are scheduled from 6-10 p.m., and will include live music, dazzling fireworks, a costume contest with cash prizes, and much more!

The origins of Devils Lake Cars traces back to Art Bergstrom’s arrival in the Lake Region in 1919. Initially working as a salesperson for Fairbanks-Morris, Art focused on selling power plants for electrification in the region’s small towns. His decision to settle in the Lake Region was driven by his passion for hunting and fishing. He fell in love with the area’s natural beauty and considered it home for his entire life.

One of Art’s significant contributions to the company was coining the phrase, “Lake Chevrolet is the house that service built, and serving the customer must always come first.” This philosophy has guided the business for a century, placing customer satisfaction as a top priority.

In 1958, Bill Bergstrom, Art’s son, entered the car business, marking the beginning of a multigenerational family business. In 1991, Renard, Bill’s son, joined the family business, followed by Ben, Renard’s son, making it a four-generation enterprise.

The original Lake Chevrolet establishment was situated on 5th Street in downtown Devils Lake. The first dedicated building for Lake Chevrolet was constructed in 1938 at 223 5th St NE. In 2007, the operation shifted one block west to its present location at the corner of Fifth Street and Second Avenue. Over the years, the company expanded its offerings by adding Toyota, Ford Lincoln and Mercury in 1986, GMC in 2007, and eventually acquiring the Devils Lake Chrysler Center in 2021, leading to the birth of Devils Lake Cars.

Devils Lake Cars presently encompasses Lake Chevrolet GMC, Lake Toyota, Devils Lake Ford, and Devils Lake Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM. With four locations, six departments (Sales, Service, Body Shop, Detail, Parts, and Rental), and around 150 employees, the company has experienced tremendous growth over the last century. It emphasizes the development of its team members and provides various opportunities for training, education, and skill-building. The recent addition of the Degrees@Work program allows employees and their families to pursue college degrees at no cost.

Being a veteran-owned and operated business, Devils Lake Cars holds a deep respect for those who have served their community and country. The company established the Devils Lake Cars Promise, offering additional savings on vehicle purchases to Clergy, Educators, Military personnel, Veterans, Police Officers, First Responders, and their own team members.

Giving back and serving the community has always been an integral part of Devils Lake Cars’ operations. The company firmly believes in investing in the growth and well-being of the Lake Region and beyond. One shining example of their commitment to community involvement is the tireless dedication of their team members, such as Jim Jacobsen.
