In 1974, U.S. President Gerald Ford designated the third week in May as EMS Week to honor EMS clinicians and the important work they do in our nation’s communities. National EMS Week 2023 marks the 49th year of this special week set aside to celebrate the EMS profession and its dedicated providers.
Each day of EMS Week has a theme dedicated to it. Sunday was “Health, Wellness and Resilience Day” to recognize the importance of health and wellness for EMS clinicians and workers. Monday is “Education Day” which emphasizes the importance of education, especially community education. Tuesday is “EMS Safety Day” with its emphasis on risk and injury prevention. Wednesday is “EMS for Children Day” to raise awareness about improving specialized care for children in both prehospital and acute-care settings. Thursday is “Save-A-LifeDay” for the general pubic to learn and prepare to help save another’s life, like CPR or STOP THE BLEED education courses, etc. Friday is “EMS Recognition Day” and an opportunity to acknowledge local EMS heroes and others who save lives.
The week is set aside to honor the immportant contributions of EMS practioners in safeguarding the health, safety and well-being of their communities.

Columbia Southern University (CSU), located at Orange Beach, Ala., recently recognized paramedic and director of operations Sean Roed at Lake Region Ambulance Service in Devils Lake, ND, as the 2023 Outstanding EMS Professional of the Year.
A leader in public safety education, CSU established the Outstanding EMS Professional of the Year Award to recognize students and graduates serving in the EMS field for their commitment to saving lives, professionalism and their accomplishments in the field. Each year, the award is bestowed upon a new winner during National EMS Week (May 21-27).
