On March 18, 2023 Ramsey County 4H Shooting Sports and the Lake Region Shooting Sports Association hosted the North Dakota State Junior Olympic 3 position Air Rifle Championships in spite of the weather. These matches are fired in each state and under the direction of the Civilian Marksmanship Program and USA Shooting. Competitors must be student athletes currently enrolled in junior or senior high school. The young athletes fire 20 shots for score from the prone position followed by 20 more shots from the standing position and finally 20 more from kneeling for a total possible score of 600.
This match provides each junior air rifle athlete the opportunity to fire a qualifying score to obtain an invitation to the National Junior Olympic 3 position Air Rifle Championships which will be held at Camp Perry, Ohio in July. It also allows a team to earn an invitation.
This year, Casia Steinhaus was able to fire an individual qualifying score of 587, but our team fell just a little short even though the team did fire the gold medal team score in this match. Competition is very strong, and the qualification scores are very high.
Casia is our 2023 North Dakota State Junior Olympic 3 position Air Rifle Champion. Rachel Vaagen earned the gold medal in the youngest age group. Our Ramsey County 4H Shooting Sports team of Casia Steinhaus, Isaac Vaagen, Rachel Vaagen and Lauren Stiven earned the team gold medal.
