Firebirds end season with shutout win over Blue Jays; state tourney next

Devils Lake's Ashlyn Abrahamson celebrates her second period goal against Jamestown in a NDHSAA girls hockey game Thursday, Feb. 20, 2020 in Devils Lake.

A slow start by Devils Lake didn't damper the final home game for its senior class.

Senior Kaylie Klemetsrud scored two goals, eighth grader Ashlyn Abrahamson added a goal and three assists and the Firebirds ended their four-game slide with the 3-0 win over Jamestown Thursday night from Burdick Arena. The win locked up the four seed in next week’s North Dakota High School Activities Association girls hockey state tournament.

“I tried to keep the emotion as low-key as possible. Last year, this game decided if we were going to state or not, this year, this game decided if we’re fourth in state or not so it was a different dynamic,” said Firebirds head coach Rob McIvor. “I understand for the girls that it was their last home game but as a coach, I was looking forward to state and who the next opponent is.”

After a scoreless opening period, Klemetsrud got her first goal of the night with a shot from near the blue line nine minutes, 32 seconds into the period. The goal was assisted by Hannah Houle and Abrahamson. A little over two minutes later, Abrahamson’s unassisted goal from straightaway upped the Firebirds (14-8-1) advantage to two.

Klemetsrud’s goal in the third period, that was assisted by Abrahamson, zipped through the legs of Blue Jays’ goalie Erika Anderson to ice the game.

With the win, the Firebirds end the season with 34 points, placing them behind Davies (52 points) and Bismarck and Fargo North/South (51).

“It’s very important,” said McIvor about the seeding leading into the tournament. “You get the last change and that can be very, very helpful especially if you have tired girls or a mismatch in lines that you can fix and it allows you to see who they’re putting out first before you put out a line so your matchups are a little bit better.”

Molly Black had 19 saves for the Firebirds, who lost this past Tuesday in a shootout against Davies. Devils Lake will open the tournament next Thursday at the Farmers Union Insurance Arena in Fargo.

The Blue Jays fell to 7-14.
