Blizzard surge past Firebirds 6-0

Bismarck's Allisyn Hulst prepares to attempt a shot against Devils Lake's goalie Molly Black with Bismarck teammate Madison Brown (15) and Devils Lake's Hannah Houle (9) on the play during a NDHSAA girls hockey game Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020 in Devils Lake.

Devils Lake played Bismarck as even as possible during the first 17 minutes of their girls hockey game Saturday, Jan. 11. It was the second 17 minutes were the wheels came off.

The Blizzard scored four goals in the second period in two rapid succession sessions to beat the Firebirds 6-0 from Burdick Arena.

“The first period was really good. We played structurally good hockey and avoided the pitfalls of the second period where some bad line changes and inappropriate icing really kind of took us out of the game there,” said Firebirds head coach Rob McIvor.

The Firebirds (6-5) trailed by one after the first period after giving up a late period goal to Bismarck’s Averie Hanson, who got the puck past Firebirds goaltender Molly Black’s left shoulder into the upper corner. But in the second period, the Blizzard (6-4-1) got the puck rolling.

Just under three minutes into the second period, Allisyn Hulst scored the Blizzard’s second goal of the game on an assist by Madison Brown. Thirty-one seconds after Hulst’s goal, Riley Ball’s goal put the Blizzard ahead by three. Back to back goals by Hulst and Brown 18 seconds apart to close out the period put the game away.

Brown tallied five points with her two goals and three assists and Hulst got three points for Bismarck which has won four straight.

“We have a small team so some of the girls get tired and then the mental errors come into play a little bit when you’re fatigued,” McIvor said about the second period collapse. “We have to erase that second period and just play fundamental hockey. Know when you’re tired, get over the red line, dump it in and get off quickly so we can attack with the second line.”

Black finished with 45 saves as the Blizzard outshot the Firebirds 51-9.
