High school roundup: Firebirds boys continue winning; Grann throws 6 TDs for No. 1 Rockets

Freshmen Brady and Tyler Goss put in another strong running, leading four Devils Lake runner to Top 10 finishes as the Firebirds scored 31 points to win the RM Stoudt Invitational held at the Parkhust Recreation Area in Jamestown on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2019.

Valley City was second with 106 points.

Brady crossed the finish in 17 minutes, 16.3 seconds and Tyler finished in 17:21.3. Junior Gabriel Houle (17:50.3) was fifth and senior Evan Halvorson (18:16.6) was 10th. Freshman Mason Haugland (18:27.1) finished 11th.

Freshman Payton Johnston was the highest finisher for the girls, crossing the line in 21:10.3 for ninth place. Quintessence Haugland (22:06.02) was 11th.

Juinor quarterback Johnny Grann completed on eight passes but six of them went for touchdowns as No. 1 New Rockford-Sheyenne defeated Nelson County 64-26 in NDHSAA 9-Man football Friday, Sept. 27 from Lakota.

Grann was 8 of 16 for 275 yards. He had touchdown passes of 65 yards to Nathan Holzwarth (2 catches, 76 yards) and a 64 yard touchdown pass to UND commit Bo Belquist. Belquist finished the game with four catches for 151 yards and three scores. Belquist also had seven tackles and returned an interception 75 yards for a third quarter scored that put the Rockets (5-0) ahead by 30.

Hunter Thompson rushed for a touchdown, caught another and had 11 tackles and a sack.

The Chargers, who outgained the Rockets 348 to 335 due to 222 yards rushing as a team, fell to 2-4 for the season.
