The Devils Lake baseball team started the East Region Tournament with a bang Thursday in Fargo.

The eighth-seeded Firebirds knocked off top-seeded West Fargo 1-0 to advance to the semifinals.

DL will need to win one time in its next two games to punch its ticket to the state tournament.

The Firebirds play the No. 5 seed West Fargo Sheyenne at 4 p.m. today at Jack Williams Stadium.

Against West Fargo, Jake Mertens took the mound and allowed four hits while striking out seven batters.

DL managed just three hits, two of which came off the bat of Ryan Haahr.

Ty Ness knocked in the lone run in the third inning.

The winner of today’s game automatically qualifies for state and plays either No. 2 Fargo Davies or No. 6 Fargo Shanley in the championship game tomorrow at 5 p.m.

The loser plays a state qualifier game at noon tomorrow against the winner of third-seeded Fargo North and No. 7 Fargo South.
