Senior Night for the Devils Lake boys basketball team was a success Friday. The Firebirds (11-7, 13-4 EDC) started five seniors, who used a quick start en route to a 70-35 win against Grand Forks Central (0-17, 0-16) in Eastern Dakota Conference action.
“It was a thank you for those seniors,” Firebirds head coach Derek Gathman said. ‘Those guys sacrifice all year and it was kind of my thanks to them. They did a great job. We had scripted out the first five plays, and we scored on three of them right away.”
DL jumped out to a 16-2 lead early in the game. The Knights scored their fourth point with a little less than 10 minutes to play in the first half.
The Firebirds cooled off with a big lead as the Knights cut it to 25-13 with four minutes before halftime, but DL ended the half on a 12-2 run.
Chandler Dick, a senior who finished with eight points off 3-of-3 shooting, ended the first half with a corner 3-pointer right before the buzzer.
Senior Mason Kostecki also added to the dominating first half, hitting four of his five 3-pointers before halftime.
The Firebirds kept it going in the second half, getting contributions from multiple players. DL had 12 players with at least two points, led by Kostecki’s 15 and followed by senior Justin Christianson’s nine points.
“It was fun to see all the guys play,” Gathman said. “The kids worked hard. We worked hard on defense and I thought their effort was there. The mentality was good. Sometimes when you’re playing a team with a worse record, you play differently and they didn’t.”
DL welcomed the opportunity of playing on their home court after a tough road stretch. The Firebirds traveled to Fargo four straight times between home games.
“You could tell we had more energy and weren’t so tired,” Gathman said. “It seems anytime we’re going to Fargo, it’s an ‘again?’ type thing. It’s nice to be home and it’ll be good this next week to not get on Highway 2 at all.”
