Though they held the Grand Forks Knightriders scoreless through most of the first period, the Devils Lake girls hockey team gave up four goals in the back half of the frame on the way to losing to Grand Forks, 10-0 on Tuesday in Burdick Arena.

Unable to capitalize on two early power play opportunities, though they managed a few solid shots on goal, the Firebirds failed to score for the first time in their last six games. Grand Forks, now 15-6 on the season, came into the matchup on a six game winning streak.

The Firebirds found themselves overmatched against one of the hottest teams in the conference, the same team they lost to 10-1 on the road earlier in the season.

Firebirds goalie Molly Black saved 41 shots on the evening while playing all 51 minutes. Knightriders center Belle LaCombe and forwards Tori Christian and Abby Schauer each scored two goals. Christian added four assists.

The Firebirds face the Bismarck JV team at Burdick Arena on Friday evening at 7 p.m. The girls will look for a better showing against the Demons, who they lost to 11-2 in Bismarck earlier in the year. After that game, the Firebirds will travel to Jamestown to face the Blue Jays, who they bested at home 7-1 for their only win of the season.

The game against Jamestown will be the final game of the regular season, though not for the program, which faced the possibility that it may be shut down before the Devils Lake School Board agreed it can continue to progress with increased participation numbers.
