The Fargo Davies boys basketball team inched to a 0.5 game back from second place Devils Lake in the Eastern Dakota Conference with an 87-76 win Tuesday at home.

The Firebirds are now 10-7 overall and 12-4 in conference standings. Davies is 12-4 overall and 11-4 in the EDC.

The game was a high-scoring affair in the first half with a 45-45 tie. In the game, the Firebirds hit 17 3-pointers while the Eagles made eight.

“Obviously we shot well from outside hitting 17 3-pointers, but struggled finding other ways to score,” Firebirds head coach Derek Gathman said. “It was tied up 45-45 at halftime and Davies was able to make a run early in the second half where they got the score to 61-50. We made a few runs at getting that lead down but just couldn't overcome that deficit.”

Jake Mertens led DL with 26 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists. Mason Kostecki scored all 24 points off his 8-of-10 shooting from 3-point range. Zach Dahlen also carried a heavy offensive load by scoring 20 points.

“We need to find ways to get stops against teams that are bigger than us,” Gathman said. “Not an easy task, but we'll have to find a way.”

After four straight trips to Fargo, the Firebirds are at home for three straight games before playing its final regular season game on the road.

DL hosts Grand Forks Central on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

“Finally nice to take a break from Fargo trips for a while,” Gathman said. “This 3-game home stretch is welcomed.”
