The Devils Lake girls and boys basketball teams traveled to West Fargo Sheyenne on Tuesday with the girls winning 70-61 and the boys losing 76-61.

Girls

The Firebirds improved to 6-9 overall and 6-8 in the Eastern Dakota Conference.

Emily Schafer led DL with 21 points. Morgan Pedeliski added 11 points and Averi Ziegler and Mattea Vetsch both scored 10.

“The girls did a good job finding a way to finish the game,” Firebirds head coach Justin Klein said.

Boys

With the loss, the Devils Lake boys move to 9-6 overall and remain in second place of the EDC with an 11-3 mark.

“Winning on the road in the EDC is going to be very tough,” DL head coach Derek Gathman said. “ Sheyenne is a really good team, their record is not indicative of their talent level. Hopefully we can get through this rough patch of our schedule with another win.”

Jake Mertens had 18 points and eight assists for the Firebirds. Nik Desai added 11 points.

DL shot just 39 percent from the field.

“I thought we relied on the 3-point shot too much last night,” Gathman said. “Earlier in the season it has covered up some of our weaknesses and we need to be more assertive in finding other shots. There's going to be nights where we don't shoot well, we just need to adjust. We didn't do a great job of recognizing that last night.”
