Fall sports officially kicked off this week with the Devils Lake cross country team beginning practice Monday and the football team starting Wednesday.

“It was exciting,” first-year head football coach Jake Wateland said. “I think everyone is excited. It was a good day. A lot of paperwork to do for the first day. We got those things taken care of and got a good practice in today.”

The Firebirds have a couple weeks of practice to prepare for the season opener at home against Williston on Aug. 28.

Meanwhile, the cross country team has two full weeks to condition and get ready for their first meet in Jamestown on Aug. 22.

“Everybody is looking in good shape and we have good numbers and good weather always helps, too,” coach Curt Kukert said. “It’s going to be a real exciting season.
